2.0 out of 5 stars The quality of Amazon’s stock of the product has decreased dramatically. The quaility in local stores is as high as ever.

This was a longtime favorite product. I go through 5 cases per month (I order 4 and supplement from a nearby store in between orders), and I’ve been getting them from Amazon for close to 5 years. I tested and compared over the last 2 months: the ones I order from Amazon are now flavorless and taste more like dry tuna fish. The fish are sticking to the bottoms of the cans and leaving a lot of residue, as though the cans had gone through many temperature changes, and all the boxes the last 2-3 months appear to have been very damp or possibly submerged and dried out. For the first time, they are hard to pry open and I have to use heavy -duty scissors. It is curious because the product can had changed early this year, and I received the new labeling on the can once. Since that first order of the new, I seem to be receiving the left-left-leftovers with the old packaging. ****The same product at my local market is delicious as ever.**** I’m changing my orders to the Lemon in hopes the quality is still what I’ve come to expect of this product. I do enjoy the convenience of the delivery, but something is not right with the product.

what happened? I purchased these several months ago…and they were wonderful. The sardines were sleek and firm and easily removed from the can. So I ordered a case this time 🙁 They were mushy and difficult to scrape out of the can. Bummers…..guess I’ll go back to the grocers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wild Planet Sardines

The best I’ve had so far! I haven’t found another brand to match Wild Planet’s quality and sustainable practices. I eat a can of these almost everyday, sometimes two cans at one sitting.

Wild Planet’s sardines do not have a bad fishy taste or smell; less than most canned tuna in my opinion. I’ve tried a cheap brand of sardines ($1 per can from the local retail giant) and they were horrible! I’ve also had more expensive imported brands of sardines and I still prefer Wild Planet. If you are reluctantly trying sardines for the first time, start with Wild Planet. If you have trouble getting Wild Planet’s down, chances are that you will like another brand even less. Most people I know, have trouble eating sardines because of the appearance. It doesn’t bother me and I prefer sardines over tuna. Also, sardines (and other small fish such as anchovies and herring) are much safer than tuna when it comes to mercury contamination.

I’ve tried several different sardine recipes, though I still prefer these plain, right out of the can, with a little unbleached sea salt. I ordered two cases (12 cans per case) of Wild Planet sardines a month ago and I am placing an order for another two cases today. Before ordering a case of these, pick up a can from your local grocery store and give them a try.

I wasn’t initially sure about Wild Planet products as I always used to get Chicken of the Sea. One of my friends pushed me to try WIld Planet because it was more healthy and apparently better for the fish population. Although I can’t speak on that, what I can say is this is the best canned sardine I’ve had in my life! The Sardines are smoked which gives them this flavor that no other brand has. After buying this case, im never going back to Chicken of the Sea.

This is coming from someone who hates sardines! I decided to purchase these after being told they would be good for my joints ( I’m a powerlifter) due to the high amounts of omega 3s they contain. First off I LOVE the quality! They are wild caught, sustainable and they DONT replace they fish oil with water which defeats the whole purpose! Also they taste like smoke salmon not a bucket of salt water like my past experiences! All i do is add some avocado on top and I’m good! This brand is truly great quality and I will continue to buy these!

I have an avocado sardine toast recipe that I call my “power lunch” – it really does last all day and I don’t get hungry in the middle of the day. These sardines are tasty and I like how they are combined with olive oil to pack even more nutritional punch. Love having a shelf stable protein option.

I purchased a number of cans of this exact version of this product from two different grocery stores. The contents of each can was excellent. Since this this a quick and easy source of protein I purchased a case from Amazon. I had the first can this morning and it was terrible. It tasted like the smell of old fish. It has also given me an acidic taste that I cant get rid of and an acidic feeling in my stomach. Very strange. The use by date on can was 01 06 21. I assume the 21 is the year. After tasting that first can I will contact the company to be sure about how to read their use by date. I am not at all anxious to test the remaining 11 cans in the case. But I will since I added the product to my subscribe and save. If even one of the 11 tastes like the first can I will definately cancel my subscribe and save.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tastes good, good for you, good for the ocean

Three main reasons why I chose and recommend Wild Planet sardines:

1) Tastes good!
I am not exaggerating when I say that Wild Planet sardines tastes way better than other brands that I have tried so far. I am a sardine fan, and I have tried a lot of other brands. Wild Planet sardines are very firm and meaty, slightly smoky, juicy and delicious. The sardines are very well cleaned and scale free.

2) Good for your general health.

a) No BPA( Bisphenol A) used as lining inside the cans.
Recently there has been lot of concerns about BPA leeching into food that many companies have switched to BPA free plastics and BPA free cans. Wild Planet is one of them. For concerns about the effects of BPA,see an article on this link. http://www.webmd.com/children/environmental-exposure-head2toe/bpa

b) This is a nutritionally dense food.
I would go as far as considering sardines as a “superfood”. These are some numbers to give you an idea of how nutritious a can of Wild Planet sardines is. Please note that all these values are PER CAN because I usually eat a whole can(4.375oz) at a time. One serving size is listed on the can as 2 oz/serving, totaling about 2.5 servings/ can. In all seriousness, I don’t know of anyone that would really open a can of sardines this size, measure out 2 oz to eat, so here it goes.
— Excellent source of protein -25g /can
— Excellent source of Omega 3 that you can EAT instead of taking pills. Each can contains 313mg EPA Omega 3 and 688mg DHA Omega 3. This is comparable to 2 soft gels of Amazon’s best-selling omega 3 nutritional supplements: Nordic Naturals – Ultimate Omega, 1000 mg, 180 softgels  But why take it in pill form when you can eat as part of one of your meals with all the added extra nutrients right?
— Excellent source of Calcium – over 50 {98880d97af0555a3a517c8aae666eeb64e7bd6d49cbbe05617dcb138f6e48200} Daily Value per can.( compare that to a serving of 8oz of 2{98880d97af0555a3a517c8aae666eeb64e7bd6d49cbbe05617dcb138f6e48200} milk which on average has about 30{98880d97af0555a3a517c8aae666eeb64e7bd6d49cbbe05617dcb138f6e48200} Calcium in it)
— Excellent source of Vitamin B12 (over 100{98880d97af0555a3a517c8aae666eeb64e7bd6d49cbbe05617dcb138f6e48200} DV), and Vitamin D(over 100{98880d97af0555a3a517c8aae666eeb64e7bd6d49cbbe05617dcb138f6e48200}DV).
— Good source of Iron (over 25{98880d97af0555a3a517c8aae666eeb64e7bd6d49cbbe05617dcb138f6e48200}DV)and Selenium (over 50{98880d97af0555a3a517c8aae666eeb64e7bd6d49cbbe05617dcb138f6e48200}DV) and
— Also, as a bonus, contains Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), a nutrient found in the body cells and believed to have an antioxidant and immune system boosting properties.

3) Good for the Ocean
I have been trying to be more responsible with my food choices. I try to eat seasonal, local and organic whenever possible. And as far as seafood, although a little bit more expensive, I try to get them “wild caught” whenever I can. However, recently I discovered that it is not enough for something to be “wild caught”. Two other factors are also important.

–HOW THEY ARE CAUGHT.
Some of the things I have learned are indeed eye opening, and really help me be more aware and environmentally responsible as a consumer on what and where to purchase my seafood products if I really care about protecting the oceans. Wild Planet uses “free school” purse seine method which means NO FADs (Fish Aggregating Devices) are used. Please see this video about FAD and why they are devastating for the ocean in destroying diversity of species.

–WHERE THEY ARE CAUGHT
This second factor is just as important because because in certain areas, combined with unsustainable methods of fishing such as one described above, there are major concerns of overfishing to the brink of certain species of fish becoming extinct in that particular area. According SeafoodWatch, Pacific sardines are rated “Best Choice” compared to Atlantic or Mediterranean sardines because there’s little bycatch and low habitat impacts.
http://www.seafoodwatch.org/seafood-recommendations/groups/sardine?q=Sardine

Wild Planet is in compliance with the green standards of Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch, Blue Ocean Institute, Ocean Wise, Sea Choice and Fishwise. Greenpeace has also evaluated Wild Planet tuna products and has rated them as a top brand for sustainable sourcing policies. – See more at: http://www.wildplanetfoods.com/thewild-way/on-the-boat/#sthash.0pWGQHzI.dpuf

To wrap up, I love these sardines by Wild Planet. The fact that the company is very environmentally conscientious makes me love the product even more. I am currently on my second case ordered through Amazon’s convenient sub and save. Compared to buying at grocery stores (if they even carry them), the price on Amazon is very good. The ones I saw at a Whole Food Market in my town was priced at $3.29/ can. So, tastes good, good for you, good for the ocean and not to mention good price here, what more could you ask for?

Don’t be fooled by the 5 star reviews. These are not the same product they used to be. I love sardines, but these have no flavor besides a mild fishy flavor. Very little salt, watery oil. Seasons brand is much better if you want sardines to put on crackers, toast, or just eat out of the can. I give these sardines 1 star because I was expecting the tasty treat that I used to get from wild planet. Also the box of 12 came sealed in plastic wrap, but the cardboard felt damp when I opened the sardine can box… Disgusting and unacceptable. What is wrong with your quality control wild country?
