Excellent condition, I had worried they would be all broken up. Strong odor so will use sparingly which helps stretch my supply!
Follow up: I’m attaching a photo to show full bag compared to a nickel & a quarter since someone asked question how many are in a pound. Yes too many to count but hopefully photo will give you something to judge quantity in a pound. 😊

I sorted this out from a pan, its doesn’t look clean, much more like moldy but dried up, found one dead bee too. The color is not right compared to those on clear plastic. Very cheap compared to other comparable but the quality is very bad. I throw most of them and pickup only the whole pod about 2 oz was kept. So beware of the cheap prize, quality is bad. I should have sent it back but found out the picture shows it, so just charge it to experience.
Edit 8/28/20 I throw them all out because they don’t smell like the one I got used to on star anise after cooking some chinese Soy Sauce Chicken. So I will just buy it locally, so I am looking for replacement.

If you think star anise is star anise, you just may be wrong. The keys to great star anise are: fragrance, freshness, intact (few broken stars), packaged environmentally responsibly and value priced. It’s easy to get some but hard to get all of these qualities in one supplier. Fortunately Red Bunny Farms LLC (I never saw a red bunny though) met all my expectations. I do recommend that if you’re going to store your stars, to over-package them in a 1 gallon freezer bag, otherwise your whole house will smell like star anise. It’s one thing Red Bunny may want to consider if they change packaging forms.

For those that may not know, star anise IS NOT the same a anise extract/anise seed you buy in the store. HOWEVER, it can be used as a perfect replacement by either 1) grinding the stars in a coffee grinder or mortar & pestle to use a ground or seed anise dependent on the coarseness of the grind or 2) soaking the stars in Vodka (cheap 80 Proof works well) for 3+ months to create the extract. In either case, star anise is much more robust than anise and requires only about 1/3-1/2 the amount to obtain the same flavor results.

These were in package with a label saying it containes sulfur dioxide, and must be cooked and cleaned thoroughly before consumption, whatever that means. I’ve uploaded a photo of the label. The package itself is labeled “Product of China” and looks like it was used by 10,000 Chinese football players as a football, most of the stars are broken. In spite of this, the product smells and looks pretty good. There are some stems and debris, and maybe that’s what the cleaning refers to. It’s a good buy for the cheap price, but next time I’ll look for local. There’s just too much pollution and corruption in China nowadays to eat their products.

A whole lotta Anise for a reasonable price. Did you know Star Anise tea is great for menstrual cramps? It is.

We bought this to add as a garnish to our hot cider we were serving at our wedding. This arrived completely crushed with only tiny pieces left, and was completely unusable. It’d be one thing if only a few were crushed as that’d be understandable, but there wasn’t even a single one that was whole. Very disappointing since we can’t even return this…

Item as delivered certainly does not match the picture shown by the seller.
I would estimate 85-90{98880d97af0555a3a517c8aae666eeb64e7bd6d49cbbe05617dcb138f6e48200} of the product is broken.
Probably still fine for my personal tea but I sure wouldn’t want to serve this to a guest.
If aesthetics or appearance matter to you, then I would recommend choosing a different seller.

These were not whole, not even the majority was whole. Also, if you notice in the picture you can see seeds, this is what I ordered this for. Out of this huge bag I got 224 seeds, I should have gotten a few thousand. Most of the pods that weren’t broken to pieces were badly mutated and didn’t even look like they had grown seeds in them. I use the seeds in making incense, so this was no where near a good purchase for me. And if you are wanting the whole pods, don’t bother, there were maybe 10 in the bag that were whole and not mutated.
